QEMU emulates machines to run software in a virtual machine.

Starting qemu

You can experience problems with strange lock-ups during harddrive access on DeLi(cate) guests running under qemu.

The problem lies in the qemu emulator and can be prevented with one of the following options:

1.) Try to switch the accelerator mode to tcg

qemu-kvm -machine pc,accel=tcg -drive file=delicate.img

2.) use qemu-system-i386 binary instead of qemu-kvm and disable the cache

qemu-system-i386 -drive file=delicate.img,cache=none

In Ubuntu qemu-system-i386 is a qemu-kvm, just use

qemu-system-i386 -machine pc,accel=tcg

For installing on a real harddisk use

qemu-system-i386 -cpu 486 -m 128 -hda /dev/sdX -cdrom delicate-0.1-alpha3.iso -boot once=d

But be careful to set /dev/sdX to the right device.

Configuring network

From man qemu "The NIC is an e1000 by default on the PC target". netconfig doesn't recognize the e1000 card. delisetup depends on the netconfig script. You still can use netconfig to configure the network (dhcp or static).

echo /sbin/modprobe e1000 >> /etc/rc.modules.d/net
