firewalls and modems
In the process of figuring out how to set up modem communications and I haven't quite figured it out yet.
Here's what I have so far.

Build/Install wvdial (wvstreams).
http://gitorious.org/chakra-packages/pla...l/PKGBUILD
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/wvdial

Set DNS. Get IP addresses from:
http://theos.in/windows-xp/free-fast-pub...rver-list/
There's a link at the bottom of the article for how to set up on various operating systems.

Run wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf and then edit /etc/wvdial.conf for your specific information in order to set up wvdial.
Run wvdial (as root or su/sudo).
Hang up with Ctrl-C or killall wvdial.

Now comes the interesting part, how to setup the firewall. That's the part I haven't figured out yet. Most of what I read seems to recommend using ipchains. Was attempting to find a front-end and figure out how to set all of this up.

The only two user interfaces I could dig up that looked promising were:

http://www.vuurmuur.org/trac/#
This uses curses.

GPE-Shield - GTK+ with few other dependencies, but I've been told the GPE project is no longer active.
http://gpe.linuxtogo.org/projects/
http://packages.debian.org/sid/gpe-shield

If anyone has any applications they think are better for this sort of thing or any tips on how best to set this up, please post. Thanks.

A few more things for modem setup/usage that I thought might be helpful:

http://pppstatus.sourceforge.net/graphic...shots.html
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/pppstatus

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/wmppp.app
http://dockapps.windowmaker.org/file.php/id/99

By the way, the dockapps site has some really interesting stuff.

That's a nice one.
I've build in the not so long ago past WindowMaker for Delicate, but I forgot to backup it before a fresh install (I'm blond).
Nowadays the sidebar with icons seems to be the latest hit (Unity etc..) perhaps it's a good idea to build it again :]

Hardware in use: Compaq PIII- 1GHZ, Geforce 4000, 256mb, 80gb HD

They should work just fine in Fluxbox or Openbox. Both have a slit to display and hide dockapps. Actually, I think they'll work with almost any window manager. They just don't hide and you need to kill the process to close them. I had wmfishtime with patches from Debian to display a digital clock working even on Windows at one point:

http://packages.debian.org/sid/wmfishtime

That 'not hiding' is perhaps a WindowMaker issue, I believe that the 'big-iconbar' is always visable. So in that case hiding is impossible.

I've made a WindowMaker PKGBUILD, but there is a small error somewhere.
It seems that styles etc are not installed at the right place, so that's one to figure out.
I solved it once (http://delicate-linux.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=124) but I can't remember how I did it..
Perhaps some reading clear things up a bit :]

Normally I'll find my way with some WMs (openbox, pekwm, fluxbox, blackbox, icewm and jwm), but WindowMaker (and FVWM) isn't that logic for me.
