Have you tried to create a new user?

useradd -m testuser
passwd testuser

then logout & login as the testuser

and finally try gnumeric again ...

The strace listing only shows major differences in the appearance settings. You're pulling the icon theme from the home directory / ROX whilst I'm pulling that from /usr/share

open("/home/theo/.icons/ROX/index.theme", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 4
open("/usr/share/icons/gnome/index.theme", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 4

In your case you additionally pull cursor.pfa ... open("/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/cursor.pfa", O_RDONLY) = 4
and that's not in my strace listing ... but hard to guess if this could be the cause ....

Thank you for looking at it, perhaps it has something to do that I'm using rox as a pinboard (with a different icon theme (I didn't like the original rox icons) ?
Maybe it's wise (in this case) to backup the important thing a do a fresh install.

You don't need to do a fresh install ... You just need to clean your home directory :] I would wait for 0.1-alpha3 CD :] It's almost ready ...
